Handwheels are the most common valve actuator. The handwheel is used to manually activate the control valve where automatic control is out of option and in many cases, the handwheel is used to override the control system 1 and operate the valve manually. Is.

Handwheels are available in a variety of designs, including those that can stroke the valve in either direction and those that stroke the valve in one direction, relying on a valve spring for the return stroke.

A valve is a mechanism or natural thing that opens, closes, or partially obstructs numerous passages to regulate, direct, or control the flow of a fluid (gases, liquids, fluidized solids, or slurries). Valve actuators are chosen depending on a number of parameters, including the amount of torque required to operate the valve and whether or not automatic actuation is required. Manual handwheels, manual levers, electrical motors, pneumatic, solenoid, hydraulic pistons, and self-actuated actuators are all examples of actuators. All actuators, with the exception of the manual handwheel and lever, can be converted to automatic operation.

There are valves in nature, such as one-way valves in veins that govern blood circulation and heart valves that control blood flow in the chambers of the heart and maintain proper pumping motion. Manually operated valves can be controlled by a handle, lever, pedal, or wheel. Valves can also be set to open and close automatically in response to changes in pressure, temperature, or flow. These changes may act on a diaphragm or a piston, which then activates the valve; safety valves installed in hot water systems or boilers are examples of this sort of valve. An actuator is required in more complex control systems that use valves that require automated control based on an external input (e.g., controlling flow through a pipe to a changing set point).

Types of  handwheels:

Types of handwheels include handwheels attached to the stem, hammer handwheels, and handwheels attached to the stem via gears.

Top-mounted and side-mounted handwheels:

Top-mounted handwheels should be for a relatively low mounted valve.

For valves at higher altitudes, a side-mounted handwheel should be selected. One can also operate the side-mounted handwheel to release and relax the chain drop plus chain locking lever.

Manual actuators can place the valve in any position, but they do not allow for automatic operation. The handwheel is the most frequent type of mechanical actuator. Handwheels that are fixed to the stem, hammer handwheels, and handwheels that are attached to the stem through gears all fall under this category.

Hammer Handwheel

The hammer handwheel rotates freely for a portion of its revolution before colliding with a lug on a secondary wheel, as shown in the diagram below.

The valve stem is connected to the secondary wheel. The valve can be pounded shut for tight closure or pounded open if it is jammed shut with this arrangement.

Gears

If a manually-operated valve requires additional mechanical advantage, the valve bonnet is equipped with manually-operated gear heads, as shown in Figure below.

When two people are required but there is no gear advantage, a special wrench or handwheel linked to the pinion shaft allows one person to operate the valve.

Gears:

If a manually operated valve requires additional mechanical advantage, the valve bonnet is equipped with manually operated gear heads as shown in the figure below.

A unique wrench or handwheel attached to the pinion shaft allows one person to operate the valve when two people are needed without the benefit of tools.

Because it takes several pinion turns to generate one turn of the valve stem, the working time of large valves is much longer. The gear can reduce the operation time of handwheel valve.
